Ukraine has started serial manufacture of
bird flu vaccine
 Ukraine's
chief veterinary physician Ivan Bisiuk declared Tuesday
Ukraine has started serial manufacture of a vaccine for
lethal strains of bird flu.
The vaccine will be made at factories in Kherson and
Sumy, Bisiuk said, Cabinet’s press office reported.
According to him, three vaccines have been developed,
specifically to deal with bird flu strains, typical of
Ukraine, such as the Sivash strain, which raises
morbidity to as high as about 80 percent.
Ukrainian farmers and homesteads of the rural population
keep about 183 M. head of poultry.

Indonesia to produce bird
flu vaccine
suitable for local people
Research is underway in Indonesia to formulate a typical
bird flu vaccine suitable for the local people and the
results are expected to come in November, the health
minister said Friday.
Minister Siti Fadilah Supari said the Indonesian version
of H5N1 vaccine will be fully produced at home once the
research is completed.
"Hopefully, there will be no further impediments because
formulating the vaccine is really a daunting task," she
told reporters here.
It will take another three to six months to test the
vaccine before mass reproduction begins, she said.
Supari said earlier that Indonesia needs to formulate
its own vaccine suitable to Indonesians, as the death
toll from the virus has reached 42.
To make a vaccine effective, it should be adjusted to
the physical conditions of the local people, she said.

LONDON (Reuters) - A bird flu vaccine for humans that
uses only a very low dose of active ingredient has
proved effective in clinical tests and could be mass
produced in 2007, its maker GlaxoSmithKline Plc said on
Wednesday.
Europe's biggest
pharmaceuticals group said it was on track to start
manufacturing by the end of 2006 and could make hundreds
of millions of doses next year, assuming the product is
approved by regulators.
It will probably cost around the same as a conventional
flu shot -- about 4 pounds ($7.40) -- and Glaxo is
talking to groups such as the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and
Malaria about funding it in poor countries.
Glaxo believes its H5N1 vaccine will work more
efficiently than rivals in development because of the
proprietary adjuvant used. Adjuvants are additives put
into vaccines that boost the immune system and make it
respond more efficiently.
A key challenge in the race to produce a vaccine for
millions of people around the world -- which governments
are keen to stockpile -- is how to make the maximum
number of shots from the minimum amount of antigen, or
active ingredient.
Antigen is produced in chicken eggs in a slow and
laborious process.
Glaxo's vaccine contains just 3.8 micrograms of antigen,
yet more than 80 percent of healthy adult volunteers who
received two doses had a strong immune response.
That level of protection meets or exceeds requirements
set by regulatory agencies for approving new flu
vaccines, and is twice as good at half the dose as
results with an experimental vaccine produced by
Sanofi-Aventis.

Does the virus spread
easily from birds to humans?
No. Though more than 100 human cases have occurred in
the current outbreak, this is a small number compared
with the huge number of birds affected and the numerous
associated opportunities for human exposure, especially
in areas where backyard flocks are common. It is not
presently understood why some people, and not others,
become infected following similar exposures.
What about the pandemic risk?
A pandemic can start when three conditions have been
met: a new influenza virus subtype emerges; it infects
humans, causing serious illness; and it spreads easily
and sustainably among humans. The H5N1 virus amply meets
the first two conditions: it is a new virus for humans
(H5N1 viruses have never circulated widely among
people), and it has infected more than 100 humans,
killing over half of them. No one will have immunity
should an H5N1-like pandemic virus emerge.
All prerequisites for the start of a pandemic have
therefore been met save one: the establishment of
efficient and sustained human-to-human transmission of
the virus. The risk that the H5N1 virus will acquire
this ability will persist as long as opportunities for
human infections occur. These opportunities, in turn,
will persist as long as the virus continues to circulate
in birds, and this situation could endure for some years
to come.
